Resort Overview
Aspen is America’s most famous and glamorous ski destination β a Victorian silver-mining town turned world-class resort that attracts A-list celebrities, serious skiers, and everyone in between. Unlike most resorts, Aspen is actually four separate mountains: Aspen Mountain (Ajax), Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass β each with its own character and a single lift pass covering all four.
The town of Aspen itself is extraordinary. Beautifully preserved Victorian architecture, world-class restaurants, luxury boutiques, and a genuine community of year-round residents give it a depth and authenticity that purpose-built resorts can’t match. It is expensive β among the most expensive ski destinations in the world β but the quality of experience at every level justifies it.
Terrain Guide
Aspen Mountain (Ajax) is the expert mountain β no beginner terrain whatsoever β with steep, groomed runs and serious bump skiing. Highlands is home to the legendary Highlands Bowl, a hike-to expert terrain zone that is arguably the finest in North America. Buttermilk is the beginner and intermediate mountain, home to the X Games halfpipe. Snowmass is the largest of the four with the most variety and excellent intermediate terrain.
Ski Schools & Lessons
The Aspen Skiing Company runs the official ski school across all four mountains. Private lessons start from USD $1,000/day at peak season β expensive but exceptional quality. The “First Tracks” programme offers guided first runs before the lifts open to the public, a wonderful experience on groomed corduroy.

Denver International (DEN) is 4 hours by road via I-70 and Colorado Highway 82 β a spectacular drive through the mountains, though subject to weather delays. RFTA buses run between Aspen and Glenwood Springs, where Amtrak California Zephyr trains stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Aspen good for beginners?
Yes, specifically through Buttermilk mountain, which is entirely dedicated to beginners and intermediates. However, Aspen Mountain (the main mountain accessed from town) has zero beginner terrain β it is expert only. Beginners should note that they will need to take a shuttle bus to Buttermilk, which is 10 minutes from town.
What is the best time to visit Aspen?
January and February offer the most reliable snow and the liveliest atmosphere. March is excellent β often the best snow conditions of the season (Colorado’s “Champagne Powder” at its finest) and increasingly sunny days. December is festive and atmospheric but snowpack can be variable early in the month.
