Base: 1,500m | Summit: 2,927m | Piste: 140km | Lifts: 26 | Season: Dec–Apr | Airport: Geneva (GVA) — 2 hrs; Sion (SIR) — 45 mins; Zurich (ZRH) — 3 hrs
Crans-Montana sits on a broad, south-facing plateau at 1,500m in Valais, looking across the Rhône valley toward the Italian Alps. One of Switzerland’s most elegant resorts, it combines the sophistication of Gstaad with better skiing — the Plaine Morte glacier (2,927m), 140km of varied piste, and one of the best views in the Alps across to the Valais Alps and Mont Blanc. Host of the Omega European Masters World Cup race annually.
Resort overview
The twin towns of Crans and Montana stretch across a wide plateau in the canton of Valais — sunny, wealthy, and with a cosmopolitan character that reflects its appeal to a Swiss and international clientele. The south-facing plateau means exceptional sunshine throughout the season, which makes conditions on the lower slopes variable but the atmosphere consistently glorious. The glacier at Plaine Morte (2,927m) provides reliable snow higher up.
The resort has a reputation for luxury and leisure to match the skiing — golf in summer (one of Europe’s finest mountain courses), spas, and excellent restaurants make it a year-round destination. The skiing is good to excellent at altitude, though the south-facing lower slopes can soften quickly in March and April.
Getting there
Sion Airport (SIR) is 45 minutes with some European connections. Geneva (GVA) is 2 hours — the main international hub. Zurich (ZRH) is 3 hours. By train, the railway from Sierre in the Rhône valley takes a funicular up to Montana in about 20 minutes — one of Switzerland’s most convenient ski resort train connections.
The skiing
Terrain and pistes
140km covering a wide altitude range from the Plaine Morte glacier at 2,927m to the plateau at 1,500m. The Cry d’Er sector has long intermediate runs with good views. The Piste du Nationale World Cup run is challenging and worth skiing. The glacier is accessible via cable car and provides the most reliable and challenging upper mountain terrain.
Ski schools and lessons
Swiss Ski School Crans-Montana and several private schools with excellent English instruction. The resort’s cosmopolitan nature means instruction in French, English, German, and other languages.
Lift passes
Six-day adult pass approximately €295–320 — premium Swiss pricing. No major multi-resort pass currently. Book online in advance.
Where to stay
Montana has the most traditional character; Crans is more chic and commercial. Both are within easy walking distance of the main lifts and gondola stations. Several luxury hotels and excellent chalets. The LeCrans Hotel and the Guarda Golf are the premier properties.

Après-ski
Sophisticated Swiss — wine bars, fondue, and excellent restaurants rather than Austrian-style energy. The Café de la Poste and the bar terraces in both towns are pleasant for après. The evening restaurant scene is among the best in Swiss skiing.
Best time to visit
January and February for the best snow at altitude. The sunshine and south-facing aspect make March and April enjoyable for spring skiing on the upper glacier — but the lower slopes can suffer. The European Masters World Cup race (September) is a unique early-season event.
Tips and insider advice
- The south-facing plateau means afternoon snow softens quickly — ski the higher sectors in the morning.
- The Plaine Morte glacier is the most reliable snow — access it early for the best conditions.
- The panoramic views from the glacier across the Valais Alps are exceptional — on a clear day you can see Zermatt’s peaks and Mont Blanc simultaneously.
- The Omega European Masters in September (before the season) is a unique occasion combining World Cup racing with the first snow of the season.
Frequently asked questions
What makes Crans-Montana’s setting special?
The resort’s broad, south-facing plateau at 1,500m gives it extraordinary sunshine and views across the Rhône valley to the Italian Alps. On a clear day the panorama extends from the Bernese Alps to Mont Blanc, with the Valais 4,000m peaks in the foreground. The combination of sunshine and dramatic scenery is among the finest in Swiss skiing.
What is the Plaine Morte glacier?
The Plaine Morte is a high plateau glacier at 2,927m above Crans-Montana — the highest point of the ski area and the most snow-reliable sector. It provides the best skiing in the resort during warm spells when the lower slopes are affected. The glacier is accessed by cable car from Montana and has excellent intermediate and advanced terrain.
Is Crans-Montana a summer destination?
Yes — it’s one of Switzerland’s premier summer resort destinations. The Crans-sur-Sierre golf courses (including the one that hosts the European Masters tournament) are among Europe’s finest mountain courses. Hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor recreation continue through the summer, and the resort’s luxury infrastructure operates year-round.
How does the train access work?
The Sierre–Montana–Crans funicular departs from Sierre station (on the main Valais railway, served by trains from Geneva and Zurich) and takes about 20 minutes to reach the plateau. This makes Crans-Montana one of Switzerland’s more conveniently rail-accessible ski resorts, though a car is useful for reaching the different lift stations across the plateau.
Is Crans-Montana good for beginners?
Moderate — the plateau at 1,500m has beginner terrain and good ski school facilities. The south-facing aspect helps beginner confidence in sunshine, but the snow conditions can be challenging (icy in the morning, soft by afternoon) compared to higher-altitude north-facing resorts. Intermediate skiers get the most from the resort.
How does Crans-Montana compare to Verbier or Zermatt?
Crans-Montana is less extreme and less expensive than Verbier (which has more challenging terrain and better off-piste). It has better sunshine than Zermatt (south-facing vs mixed aspects). Crans-Montana suits those who prioritise atmosphere, style, and panoramic skiing over pure terrain challenge. It’s often described as the Riviera of Swiss skiing.
What is the World Cup race at Crans-Montana?
The Omega European Masters is a prestigious World Cup giant slalom and super-G event held annually on the Piste du Nationale, usually in late February or early March. It’s one of the most popular World Cup events in Switzerland and brings a significant crowd and festival atmosphere to the resort for race week.
Is Crans-Montana suitable for families?
Good — the wide, gentle plateau has appropriate beginner terrain and good ski school infrastructure. The sunshine and relaxed atmosphere suit family skiing. The plateau layout is easy to navigate for groups with children. The cost of the resort (accommodation and restaurants) is high by Swiss standards, which is the main limitation for budget-conscious families.
