Resort Overview

Val Thorens sits at 2,300 metres above sea level — the highest resort base in Europe — which gives it a near-guarantee of snow from November through to early May. It is a purpose-built resort, completed in 1971 as part of the vast Les Trois Vallées ski area, which at 600km of marked pistes is the largest interconnected ski area in the world.

The resort has a well-earned reputation as one of the best in France for serious skiers. The altitude means the snow stays dry and light even in late season, and on-piste conditions are typically excellent for the longest season of any resort in the Alps. The village itself is high-density and functional rather than pretty, but accommodation is ski-in/ski-out almost universally, which is a significant practical advantage.

Val Thorens suits intermediate to expert skiers best, though beginners will find dedicated learning zones. It is particularly popular with British, Scandinavian, and Dutch skiers, and the resort has a lively après-ski scene centred around a cluster of famous bars.

Terrain Guide

Val Thorens alone offers 150km of marked runs across 32 lifts. The terrain splits roughly 10% beginner, 60% intermediate, and 30% expert. The Cime de Caron cable car (arriving at 3,200m) gives access to some of the most spectacular and challenging terrain in the Alps, with north-facing bowls holding excellent snow even late in the season.

The real draw is access to the full Trois Vallées network — ski through to Méribel and Courchevel in the same day. Strong skiers can cover all three valleys in a single long day, a bucket-list experience for any serious piste skier.

Ski Schools & Lessons

The two main ski schools are the ESF Val Thorens (the official French ski school, the world’s largest ski school organisation) and Snow Systems, which has an excellent reputation for English-speaking instruction and smaller group sizes. Group lessons start from around €200 for 6 half-days. Private lessons run €60–100 per hour depending on the instructor and school.

Getting There

Geneva Airport (GVA) is the most popular gateway, approximately 2 hours by road in good conditions. Lyon Airport (LYS) is around 2.5 hours. Chambéry Airport (CMF) is the closest at around 1.5 hours and is used heavily by UK charter flights during ski season.

The transfer service AltiBus runs shared coaches from all three airports throughout the season. Taxis and private transfers are also widely available. Driving is straightforward via the A43 motorway to Moûtiers, then winding mountain roads up to Val Thorens — chains or winter tyres are mandatory from Moûtiers upwards.

Dining & Après-Ski

La Folie Douce — the legendary mountain-top après-ski venue with live music, DJ sets, and the finest people-watching in the Alps. Arrive by 3pm to get a spot.

Le Chamois d’Or — excellent traditional Savoyard cuisine. Try the fondue and tartiflette. Reliable and consistently good.

Le Fitz Roy — the restaurant at the Fitz Roy hotel. Fine dining with exceptional mountain views and a superb wine cellar.

Malaysia — famously the place for a beer at the end of the ski day. One of the original Val Thorens bars and still the most reliably fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Val Thorens good for beginners?

Val Thorens is manageable for beginners but is not the ideal resort for a first ski trip. The altitude and exposure can be challenging, and much of the terrain is intermediate or above. That said, there are dedicated beginner zones at the base of the resort, and the ski school is excellent. A better option for absolute beginners might be Méribel or Courchevel 1650 within the same Trois Vallées area, which offer more sheltered learning terrain.

What is the snow like in March?

March is one of the best months in Val Thorens. The altitude ensures the snowpack remains in excellent condition, daylight hours are noticeably longer than January, and the risk of flat-light overcast days is slightly lower. Expect average on-piste snow depths of 120–200cm in mid-March.

How much does a lift pass cost?

A 6-day Val Thorens area pass costs approximately €350–400 in peak season. A Trois Vallées pass (covering all 600km) costs approximately €380–440 for 6 days. Both are significantly cheaper if purchased in advance online, and early-season or late-season dates offer meaningful discounts of 20–30%.

Nearby Resorts

  • Méribel — directly connected via the Trois Vallées. The most charming of the three valleys, with a more traditional village feel.
  • Courchevel — the glamorous sibling. Five linked villages from 1300m to 1850m, also directly connected.
  • La Rosière — smaller, quieter resort 1.5 hours away. Good for families.
