Resort Overview
Verbier is Switzerland’s most celebrated ski resort and one of the great destinations in Alpine skiing. Perched on a sun-drenched plateau in the canton of Valais, it combines world-class on-piste skiing with some of the most famous off-piste terrain in the Alps, a glamorous village, and a nightlife scene that rivals Ibiza for energy and celebrity spotting.
The resort forms the centrepiece of the 4 Vallées ski area, with 412km of marked runs connecting Verbier to the quieter resorts of Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, and La Tzoumaz. But Verbier’s real reputation rests on its off-piste: the Backside of Mont Fort, the Col des Gentianes, and the legendary Tortin wall are pilgrimage terrain for expert skiers from around the world.
Be aware: Verbier is expensive even by Swiss standards. Accommodation, dining, and nightlife costs are among the highest of any ski resort globally. But for serious skiers who want the best off-piste access in the Alps combined with a world-class mountain village, the price is justified.
Terrain Guide
The terrain breakdown: approximately 10% beginner, 40% intermediate, 50% expert and off-piste. Verbier is genuinely not an ideal resort for beginners or nervous intermediates — the mountain rewards confident, competent skiers. The summit of Mont Fort at 3,330m gives access to the glacier and some extraordinary high-mountain terrain in good visibility.
The famous La Chaux and Les Attelas areas are the heart of Verbier’s on-piste intermediate terrain. For experts, the Stairway to Heaven and the Backside offer ungroomed, challenging runs that are among the best in the Alps on a good powder day.
Ski Schools & Lessons
The top ski school in Verbier is widely considered to be New Generation, a British-run school with an outstanding reputation for English-speaking instruction and a guest satisfaction rate that consistently beats the competition. Warren Smith Ski Academy is another excellent choice for expert skiers wanting to push their technical limits. Group lessons from CHF 200 for 5 half-days; private guiding from CHF 600/day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Verbier suitable for intermediate skiers?
Yes, but it is better suited to confident intermediates and above. Nervous or early intermediates may find the terrain intimidating and would be better served by a resort with more gentle blue runs. Strong intermediates, however, will have an extraordinary time exploring the 4 Vallées area.
What is the snow record in Verbier?
Verbier receives an average of around 5.5 metres of snow per season, typically falling between December and March. The high altitude of the upper mountain (2,200–3,300m) ensures excellent snow conditions through to April in most years. February and March are statistically the best months for combining reliable snow with improving weather.
