Resort Overview
Zermatt is one of the most iconic mountain destinations in the world, defined by the unmistakable silhouette of the Matterhorn rising above a beautifully preserved car-free village. Sitting at 1,620m in the Swiss canton of Valais, the resort offers the highest ski station in the Alps at the Klein Matterhorn (3,883m), year-round glacier skiing, and access across the border into Italy’s Cervinia ski area.
The village itself is among the most charming in the Alps β a genuine mountain community of wooden chalets, narrow streets, and horse-drawn sleighs rather than a purpose-built resort. There are no petrol-engine vehicles; guests arrive by train from TΓ€sch or by the Glacier Express from other Swiss cities.
Zermatt is an exceptional choice for those who want the complete Alpine experience: extraordinary high-altitude skiing, a world-class village, and scenery that is simply unmatched in the Alps.
Terrain Guide
The ski area divides across three main sectors: Rothorn, Stockhorn, and Klein Matterhorn/Glacier. The piste breakdown is approximately 20% beginner, 60% intermediate, 20% expert. The Klein Matterhorn sector at 3,883m offers year-round glacier skiing and is the most spectacular high-mountain terrain in the Alps. On a clear day from the summit, you can see over 20 four-thousand-metre peaks.
The connection to Italy’s Cervinia ski area (via the Theodul Pass) is a highlight β ski from Switzerland to Italy for lunch and back, one of the great Alpine experiences.
Ski Schools & Lessons
The Swiss Ski School Zermatt (SSKZ) is the main official school with hundreds of instructors. Summit Ski School and Stoked Ski School are popular alternatives with good English-speaking instruction. Group lessons from CHF 200/5 half-days. Private instruction from CHF 120/hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you ski to Italy from Zermatt?
Yes β the connection to Italy’s Cervinia is one of Zermatt’s great draws. Via the Theodul Pass, you ski from Switzerland into Italy and can have lunch in Cervinia before returning. A Zermatt-Cervinia combined pass is required; not all Zermatt passes include Cervinia automatically.
Is Zermatt good for families?
Zermatt is excellent for families. The car-free village is safe and stress-free, the ski school has strong children’s programmes from age 3, and the variety of terrain means the whole family can ski together. The train arrival (no driving in snow) is a particular advantage for families.
