Overview

Winter Park Resort in Colorado’s Front Range has been open since 1940 — one of America’s oldest continuously operating ski areas. It sits 103 km (67 miles) from downtown Denver, genuinely accessible as a day trip. But Winter Park is far more than a day-trip resort: with 3,081 acres across seven distinct territories, including the legendary Mary Jane mogul runs that rival anything in Colorado, it’s a serious mountain with a loyal following. The Ikon Pass includes Winter Park with unlimited days.

Why Ski Winter Park?

Winter Park has two personalities. The main Winter Park side is excellent for intermediates — long, wide groomers and a well-developed beginner area. Then there’s Mary Jane, a completely separate area connected at the ridge, which is one of America’s great expert mountains. Mary Jane’s mogul fields — Outhouse and Drunken Frenchman — are pilgrimage runs for bumpers nationwide. The resort averages 335 inches of snow annually, with light, dry powder from its west-side Continental Divide position.

The Seven Territories

Winter Park — main beginner/intermediate face. Mary Jane — expert moguls and trees. Vasquez Ridge — wide open intermediate cruisers. Parsenn Bowl — above-treeline powder bowl. Vasquez Cirque — expert backcountry-style terrain. Irwin Glades — guided powder on extreme off-piste. Eagle Wind — 1,200-acre intermediate-to-expert glades expansion.

Best For

  • Expert skiers — Mary Jane’s moguls are among the best in North America
  • Powder hounds — 335 inches average and light Front Range snow
  • Ikon Pass holders — unlimited days, no blackout dates
  • Denver locals — the most accessible serious mountain from the city

Après Ski

Derailer Bar at the base is the classic après venue — packed after every powder day with live music. The Lodge at Sunspot on the ridgeline offers fine dining with panoramic Rocky Mountain views. In town: Randi’s Irish Saloon and Deno’s Mountain Bistro are local favourites.

Where to Stay

Winter Park Mountain Lodge is the flagship slope-side property. The Vintage Hotel offers comfortable ski-in/ski-out rooms. The town of Fraser (5 km away) has more affordable options. Airbnb cabins in Fraser Valley offer great value for groups.

Tours & Activities

Winter Park vs Other Colorado Resorts

Winter Park has more expert terrain than Keystone and a less touristy feel than Breckenridge. Mary Jane’s mogul runs are unmatched in the region. For intermediates, Breckenridge may suit better. See our full USA ski guide for more.
